Fix Your Heat Pump Or Get It Right Before It’s Installed

If your heat pump isn’t working as it should — high bills, poor heating, or something just doesn’t feel right — I’ll help you figure out exactly what’s going on.
I also work with homeowners before installation, helping you understand whether a proposed system is right for your home and what questions to ask before moving forward.
This isn’t a generic report or a sales process. It’s a practical, hands-on approach to understanding your system and getting it working properly.
With over 20 years of experience in plumbing, heating, and renewables, I focus on diagnosing real issues and helping homeowners fix them — often where others haven’t been able to.
In most cases, we can identify the problem on a call and give you clear steps on what to do next.

Why We Exist

Heat pump systems are complex. When something goes wrong — high bills, poor heating, a system that runs constantly without reaching temperature — it can be genuinely difficult to know whether the cause lies in system design, hydraulic layout, flow temperatures, controls configuration, or commissioning. Installers and manufacturers are not always best placed to investigate their own work objectively.

UK Heat Pump Help exists to provide a third-party technical perspective — an honest assessment of what's happening and why, without any commercial interest in the answer. We do not install systems. We do not sell equipment. We provide structured written reports for homeowners.`

Our Approach

The approach is simple — understand what’s happening, identify the problem, and work through how to fix it.

The approach is simple — understand what’s happening, identify the problem, and work through how to fix it.

We look at how your system has been designed, how it’s set up, and how it’s actually performing in your home.

Rather than relying on theory or generic advice, everything is based on real systems and real-world experience — focusing on practical solutions that can be applied straight away.

Where needed, we also work alongside your installer to help get the right outcome.

Who We Support

We support homeowners across the UK who are dealing with heat pumps that aren’t performing as expected — whether that’s high running costs, poor heating, or systems that just don’t feel right.

Who Is Behind UK Heat Pump Help?

I'm Gary, a heating engineer with over 20 years of hands-on experience in plumbing, heating, and renewable systems. Everything I do is based on real-world experience — not theory, and not influenced by what you buy or who installs it.

I now focus purely on helping homeowners understand what’s gone wrong with their heat pump — and how to fix it properly.

I started my career in plumbing in 2001, completing a full apprenticeship and working with the same company until 2007. From there, I went out on my own and ran a plumbing business for seven years, working directly with homeowners and building up practical experience across all types of domestic heating systems. In 2014, I set up a bathroom installation company, delivering around 35 high-specification bathroom projects in just 18 months. The business was successful, but I found myself drawn back to the technical side of the work system performance, diagnostics, and problem-solving rather than managing larger renovation projects. That shift led me into renewables.

Moving Into Heat Pumps

Moving Into Heat Pumps

I initially focused on solar thermal before going into business with a partner, where we built a plumbing and renewables company together. At that stage, heat pumps were a small part of what we did. Then COVID hit, and the business changed overnight we went from 15 plumbers to 3, and by the end of 2021, we went our separate ways.

From there, I moved into subcontracting for a large PV company that was, at the time, fitting heat pumps occasionally two or three per month at most. That didn't stay the case for long.

Building Heat Pump Experience at Scale

Building Heat Pump Experience at Scale

By mid-2024, we had grown to four installation teams delivering between 12 and 18 heat pump systems per month. The challenge that came with that scale was significant most of these jobs were coming through sales teams with limited technical understanding of what a heat pump system actually requires. In practice, we were frequently identifying and correcting design problems before installation had even started.

I stepped into a more senior role within the company, helping to restructure how projects were specified and delivered. We removed generic sales input from the design process and brought in people who genuinely understood the systems, including training my own apprentice into a key technical role. Since then, the company has continued to grow, now delivering both large council housing contracts and private domestic installations across the UK.

What I Do Now

What I Do Now

Today, my work spans heat pump system design, training new installers, technical support across live installations, and identifying and resolving performance issues on existing systems. I've worked across hundreds of domestic heat pump installations from initial design and heat loss calculation through to commissioning and fault diagnosis.

That experience means I don't just understand how a correctly designed heat pump system should perform. I understand where they go wrong, why they go wrong, and what it actually takes to fix them properly, not just enough to stop the calls coming in.

The systems I've worked on cover the full range of domestic heat pump scenarios: new build installations and retrofits, systems with undersized or poorly performing radiators, high running costs caused by incorrect setup, poorly configured controls and weather compensation, installations requiring a full redesign before they could be commissioned, and systems that were technically running but failing to heat the property as they should.

In many of those cases, the fault wasn't obvious from the outside. It came down to understanding how every part of a system works together and knowing where to look when it doesn't.

UK Heat Pump Help exists because homeowners deserve independent heat pump advice from someone who has spent years working on these systems for real not someone reading from a manual or working from a sales script. If your system isn't performing as it should, I'll tell you why, and what can actually be done about it.

Our Commitment

We are committed to technical accuracy, independence, and clear communication in every review. Each assessment is carried out with careful engineering attention, and every report is written to give homeowners the clarity they need — whether that's to take action themselves, go back to their installer with confidence, or simply understand what they're living with.
