Heat Pump Running in Summer – Constant Call for Heat (Wiring Fault)
The Problem
A homeowner reported unusually high energy usage during the summer months.
There was no demand for heating, yet the heat pump appeared to be running regularly, leading to unnecessary electricity consumption.
What I Found
During a video call, it became clear that the system was receiving a constant call for heat from somewhere within the controls.
This meant the heat pump was continuing to operate even when no heating should have been required.
After further investigation with the homeowner and a qualified electrician, we identified the root cause:
A control wire had been connected to the wrong terminal
This was causing the radiator circuit to be permanently enabled
Because the radiator TRVs were turned down, the homeowner hadn’t noticed any heat output — but the system was still cycling.
As a result:
The heat pump was effectively running with the buffer tank being constantly heated
No useful heat was being delivered into the property
Energy usage was high even in the summer
What I Changed
Working alongside the electrician on-site via video call, we:
Corrected the wiring fault at the control point
Ensured the radiator circuit only activated when there was a genuine call for heat
Reviewed the full system controls to confirm correct operation across all zones
The Outcome
Once the wiring issue was resolved, the unwanted call for heat was eliminated.
The heat pump stopped running unnecessarily, and system behaviour became normal.
Energy usage reduced, and the homeowner regained full control of when and how the system operated.
